Bob McFee at Manhattans Guelph - April 16, 2019Manhattans Music Club

So much for the "monthly" newsletters. I've been busy.

Returned to Manhattans Music Club (Guelph) in March, playing solo piano every other Tuesday. Next date is April 16.

On April 30, International Jazz Day, David Cowell joins me on guitar to celebrate Jazz Day at Manhattans. Make reservations ASAP.

Michael's on the Thames

I continue to perform weekly at Michael's on the Thames (solo piano on Fridays, Accent Trio on Saturdays).

Michael's has also started a Jazz Night on Thursdays. Have played the jazz night three times: Solo, with Accent Trio and with The Reid Quartet. RQ also performed at the London Heritage Awards in February.

Album ~ 9½ Fingered Piano

In spite of a busy performance schedule, I have been working on the two albums. You can listen to some examples below: So Lonesome, Me & Bobby, Sleeping Giant.

My piano album, tentatively entitled, 9½ Fingered Piano, will not likely include covers of songs written by other people but the music will stylistically resemble some covers I perform when playing solo. Here are two examples. When you click on the link it will open in a new window.

Album ~ Superior Soundscapes

I am also working on a second project with the working title Superior Soundscapes. This is music inspired by my photos of Lake Superior. It is considerably different, in the realm of ambient music, soundtrack music, using sampled and synthesized sounds. Here is the Intro to Sleeping Giant ...

The 9½ Fingered Piano Player

Yes. I am The 9½ Fingered Piano Player. An accident some years ago forced me to give up playing guitar and go back to piano. This turned out to be a good thing. I rediscovered my love of piano. Of course, band mates have referred to me as Agent 009½ or The 9½ Fingered Piano Player. I have decided to embrace that nickname. The logo is an actual tracing of my hands. I will keep 9½ fingers crossed that you will enjoy this newsletter and the music I create.

In Love With Love

I was the piano player in Indigo Riff. We recorded an album of original tunes, In Love With Love, had a lot of fun and created our own unique music and stage persona. I wrote some of the music and lyrics and also sang backup on a few songs. My time with Indigo Riff was an exceptional part of my life.

You can preview and/or purchase the album HERE.

Michael's on the Thames

It's been three years since I started playing two nights per week at Michael's on the Thames. This continues to be rewarding in many ways. I play solo piano on Friday evenings and with Accent Trio on Saturday evenings. If you live within driving distance of London ON, call 519-672-0111 to make a reservation. Please make a point to say "Hi" when you are at Michael's. I often can't see who is in the restaurant due to the position of the piano and the lighting on stage.

Current Project

Over the coming year I will be recording an album of original music. Several tracks are already written / arranged while others are just ideas. The songs will be mostly instrumental but some may have vocals by me and/or a female vocalist. I plan to involve musician friends playing a variety of instruments and hope to find a violinist to add a little Gypsy feel. Here's a first taste of what's to come ... Just click the image.

Recent videos for Brown Dog Blues and Short of Time can be found on my website on the Photos page.

Influences

In each issue of the newsletter I plan to include a video of music that I enjoy. Here's Aurora Nealand and The Royal Roses playing The Devils Gonna Get Ya. Just click the image.

Need to Create

Bob McFeeFor those of you who don't know, I was the piano player in Indigo Riff. We worked together for six years creating enough original music to fill an album, In Love With Love (see Music page) and to play three-hour gigs. Alas, the band is no longer performing. Since Indigo Riff I have been playing jazz covers, both solo and with Accent Trio, at a local restaurant. This has been, and continues to be, rewarding in many ways but has not addressed my need to create original music.

Over the past year or two, I have rediscovered original tunes and generated some new ideas. It is my dream to work these tunes and ideas into a new album of original material. I will be playing various keyboard instruments and some musician friends will, I hope, join me on an assortment of instruments as well as vocals. Who knows? I may sing a song or two but it would be lovely to find a female vocalist interested in this music.

In subsequent blog posts and newsletters, I will share glimpses of the music as it takes shape. The music will continue in a "jazzy, blues-infused" style but may become a little more eclectic and have some Gypsy jazz and New Orleans influences.

If you are interested in following the progress of this project, please sign up for the newsletter. You will receive a free download of Caffeine from the Indigo Riff album.

Stay tuned.
